Make 32 half square triangles using 2 16” squares of fabric
Making a Mountain of HSTs: 32 at Once!
Half Square Triangles (HSTs) are a quilting staple. They’re versatile, fun, and can create a huge variety of patterns. But cutting and sewing individual HSTs can be time-consuming, especially for larger projects. That's where this handy method comes in: making 32 HSTs from just two large squares! This method is perfect for scrap quilts or when you need a large number of identical HSTs.
The Magic of Large Squares
We're going to use two 16" squares of fabric to create a whopping 32 HSTs. This technique is efficient and accurate when done carefully. Here’s how:
What You’ll Need:
Two 16" squares of fabric (contrasting colors work best for demonstration)
Rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat
Sewing machine
Iron
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Layer and Mark: Place your two 16” squares right sides together, ensuring the edges are perfectly aligned. On the top square, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner. Then, draw another diagonal line from the remaining two corners. You should have an "X" across your square.
More Lines! Now, we’ll add more lines. Draw lines parallel to the first diagonal lines, 2” away on either side of the center line. You will end up with 5 lines total running diagonally across the square. Repeat this process for the other diagonal line. You should have 5 lines running in each direction.
Sewing Time: Sew a ¼” seam on both sides of each drawn line. This is the most crucial step for accuracy. Take your time and ensure your seam allowance is consistent.
The Big Cut: Now for the fun part! Using your rotary cutter and ruler, cut along each of the drawn lines. First, cut along the diagonal lines of the "X". Then cut along all the parallel lines you drew. This will give you 32 individual HSTs.
Pressing: Press each HST. Pressing the seams open is generally recommended as it reduces bulk and makes piecing later on easier.
Trimming (Optional): Depending on the accuracy of your cutting and sewing, your HSTs might need a little trimming. Use a square ruler to trim each HST to 3.5” square. This will ensure they are all the same size and your finished project will be more accurate.
Why This Method Works:
By drawing multiple lines and sewing on both sides, we create multiple HSTs from one set of sewn squares. This drastically reduces the cutting time compared to cutting individual triangles.
Tips for Success:
Accuracy is Key: Precise cutting and a consistent ¼” seam allowance are essential for accurate HSTs.
Sharp Tools: A sharp rotary cutter and fresh blade will make cutting much easier and more precise.
Press, Don’t Iron: When pressing, lift and lower your iron rather than sliding it across the fabric. This prevents distortion.
Check Your Math: Double-check your measurements and markings before cutting to avoid mistakes.
Using Your HSTs:
Now you have 32 beautiful HSTs ready to be incorporated into your next quilting project! They can be used for anything from simple nine-patch blocks to complex and intricate designs.
This method is a game-changer for making lots of HSTs quickly and efficiently. Give it a try and see how much time you save! Happy quilting!
